Besides giving skin, eyes, and hair their color, melanin helps protect our skin from the sun. It does this by causing skin to tan instead of burn — which is why people with darker skin (more melanin) are less likely to burn than people with lighter skin. So people with albinism can sunburn very easily.
It’s important for persons living with albinism to protect the skin from the sun, by using a sunscreen with a high SPF factor especially when there’s a chance of exposure, and by wearing clothing that offers sun protection, such as hats, or long-sleeved clothings.
Some important and useful materials to make everyday living for a PWA is expensive. We provide resources like glasses, umbrellas, sunscreens, that’ll help make everyday life easier for a person with albinism
Finally, much of our focus is to stimulate a movement that roots out socio-cultural stereotypes about albinism in Nigeria and the world, and plant the seeds of empowerment for people living with albinism.
